Dark purple buds. Soft pink flowers. The magnolia that blooms longest.

Magnolia liliiflora, the Lily Magnolia, is the most intensely colored of the deciduous magnolias, producing buds in deep purple-red that open to goblet-shaped flowers with rich purple-pink outer petals and creamy white inner petals in a combination that is more dramatic and less pastel than the Saucer Magnolia or Star Magnolia. It blooms in spring after the leaves have begun to emerge, which protects its flowers from late frosts that damage early-blooming magnolias, and then continues to produce scattered flowers through much of the summer, giving it a longer effective flowering season than most ornamental magnolias. Native to Yunnan Province in China, it is the parent species of the famous Little Girl hybrid magnolias and a prized garden shrub in its own right. If you are looking to buy Lily Magnolia seeds or grow this flowering magnolia from seed, each seed-grown specimen develops its own flower color and form.

  • Deep purple-red buds opening to goblet-shaped flowers with rich purple-pink outer and white inner petals
  • Blooms after leaf emergence, protecting flowers from late spring frosts that damage earlier-blooming magnolias
  • Continues producing scattered flowers through summer, longer effective season than most ornamental magnolias
  • Parent species of the famous Little Girl hybrid magnolias, one of the most influential magnolias in ornamental horticulture
  • Compact shrub-like form suitable for smaller gardens where larger magnolias are impractical

Things you probably did not know about the Lily Magnolia

It is the direct parent of more named magnolia hybrids than any other species. When plant breeders at the US National Arboretum crossed Magnolia liliiflora with Magnolia stellata in the 1950s and 1960s, they produced the Little Girl series of hybrid magnolias, including Betty, Ann, Jane, Judy, Susan, Randy, Ricki, and Pinkie, that are now among the most widely planted ornamental magnolias in North American gardens. Every one of these hybrids carries the late-blooming and cold-hardiness traits inherited directly from the Lily Magnolia parent.

The flower color varies significantly between seed-grown specimens. Lily Magnolia flowers range from light pink with only faint purple tones to deep purple-red with almost no pink visible, depending on the individual plant's genetics. The outer and inner petal contrast, which creates the bicolor effect characteristic of the species, also varies in intensity between individuals. Growing from seed produces a range of color expressions that no single nursery selection can provide.

The flower buds are so dark they are used as ornaments in Chinese floral arrangement. The elongated, dark purple flower buds of Lily Magnolia, which develop through winter on bare branches, are harvested in the bud stage and used in traditional Chinese flower arrangement for their color, form, and texture. The buds, called xin yi in Chinese medicine, are also used in preparations for nasal and sinus conditions.

The species has been cultivated in Chinese gardens for over 1,000 years. Magnolia liliiflora appears in Chinese garden literature and plant records dating back to the Tang Dynasty and earlier. It was one of the first Chinese ornamental plants introduced to European botanical gardens, arriving in France and England in the late 1700s. It has been in continuous western cultivation for over 200 years as a result.

Finally!
I search constantly for toys without a squeaker and never seem to find one. My curious pup loves ripping them out so I stay away from them. But finally one that he loves but has no interest in tearing apart because it has no squeaker!! Win!

Squeakerless
It is very life like. Held up well but is starting to show some wear after 6 months. I attempting to repair a couple of holes that have shown up. The sqeakerless is nice but would love a noiseless squeaker. I would give 5 stars if I can patch the holes.

Almost 2 years now! Super strong and the puppers loves it. NO SQUEAKER!!!! YAY
Nov 2022 marks 2 years it's now near Oct 2022 unless this thing completely falls apart in the next month it's gonna easily make 2 years. I honestly see this going 3-4 years. There is little damage still. Just a tear near the ear that isn't spreading and the tail is still showing the tiny amount of white. This thing is a beast! Video is from almost Oct 2022. 1 year and 2 months on (last three pics are of it currently) and it's still holding up nearly perfectly. Bought this in Nov of 2020 Jan 2022 it's still around while all other toys are destroyed. This is completely worth every single penny. 6 month update: See pictures for the only damage to the toy so far. Note the tail is the place my girl tends to offer me to grab. She also gnaws on that area and the ears. The one ear has fur missing now. Eyes are still good to go as they are stitched rather than separate plastic eyes. However for 6 months of dog abuse, I'd say the toy is holding up quite well. I feel I'll get close to a year out of it maybe a bit more or less. The pupper girl always destroys her toys. This one has lasted quite a while compared to the others. I don't see this falling apart for a while. I believe we may get a year or more out of it. Well worth the price!

not for aggresive chewers
This premium priced toy did not last 15 minutes with my 14 month old 34 poundf Labradoodle. I had great expectations based on the description but the very cute squirrel toy did not last, First hole was through one of the eyes and the internal stuffing was then spread everywhere.

Perfect for a hound puppy
I have a difficult time finding plush toys that won’t immediately fall apart AND doesn’t have any secret squeakers. It’s bigger than I expected, his long hound mouth can barely fit the body inside - and it is very thick that it satiates the bite and catch component. He absolutely loves it, he will bounce it, chase after it and then pass out for a nap once he is done. He knows the toy by name and brings a lot of joy.. Highly recommend.
